Abstract To mitigate channel aggradation and flood hazards caused by hyperconcentrated tributary inflows in the Inner Mongolia reach of the Yellow River, a series of flume experiments based on the asymmetric 90° confluence where the Xiliugou River enters the Yellow River is conducted to systematically examine the coupled effects of discharge ratio ( R ) and tributary sediment concentration ( S t ) on confluence morphodynamics. R was set to 1.0, 1.4, 2.2, and 3.8, and S t was set to 0, 100, 200, 400, and 600 kg/m 3 . Bed-elevation difference fields (Δ z ) derived from pre-run and post-run surveys were used to quantify the areas and volumes of scour and deposition, the maximum scour depth, and the maximum deposition thickness.
